Applicable Law - Arizona Regulation R12-4-407.1
Desert torts possessed without special license prior to 4/29/89 may be repossessed, transported, and given away. Desert torts may be propagated and progeny may be held in captivity for 24 months after hatching.

Desert torts may not be taken from the wild. The AZ Game & Fish Department lists the desert tort as a "restricted" animal. Desert torts may not be imported into or exported from Arizona. It is also against federal protection law to transport desert torts across state lines.

Possession of desert torts is limited to one tort per person.

It is illegal to release a desert tort into the wild or in the city.

Adoption of desert torts is coordinated by the Adobe Mountain Wildliufe Center in Phoeniz (I will get more info about them). Adoption applications can be found on the state DNR website.

Local, state, and federal agencies have teamed up to for the Arizona Interagency Desert Tort Team (AIDTT), which handles research and management of the Mojave and Sonoran populations. (I will get additional information on this agency as well).
